Project B1-M – “The Reformed Char”
(Unofficially “The Spacious B1” or simply “B1-M”)

France’s answer to the mass-produced walkers of the other powers was characteristically elegant in concept if limited in resources. Taking the Char B1 as the base, designers deleted the heavy hull-mounted 75 mm gun, its ammunition, and the entire tracked suspension. The one-man APX-4 turret — historically the B1’s greatest weakness — was completely redesigned and tripled in internal volume. The result was a lighter, far more practical bipedal machine that finally allowed the 47 mm gun to be used effectively.The redesigned walker masses approximately 24–26 tonnes. A three-man crew is carried: a pilot/driver in the clean, sloped box hull, a commander/spotter, and a dedicated gunner/loader in the spacious turret. With room to work, the loader can sustain 15–20 rounds per minute from the 47 mm SA 35 anti-tank cannon — three times the practical rate of the original cramped turret. Larger optics and smooth hydraulic traverse allow rapid target acquisition and tracking of moving targets. The 47 mm SA 35 fires at 660–700 m/s and can reliably penetrate 40–55 mm of armour at 500 m (less at longer ranges). Effective anti-armour range is roughly 800–1,200 m; beyond that its performance falls off sharply against anything but soft targets.The hull uses a simplified, well-angled box derived from the original Char B1 armour scheme. With no track runs or hull gun port to create weak points, the frontal protection is excellent for its weight class and will reliably ricochet or defeat lighter anti-tank rounds. The oversized turret received additional spaced plating and a heavy mantlet, making it extremely difficult for early- to mid-war guns to defeat from the front. Stability is outstanding: the single light gun keeps the centre of gravity low, allowing the machine to fire accurately while walking or on slopes. Top speed reaches 24–26 km/h on flat ground. The reduced weight and bipedal legs give it genuine all-terrain mobility — deep mud, trenches, and urban rubble that stopped tracked vehicles are crossed with relative ease. In the hierarchy of the old monsters the B1-M occupies the same niche as the British Churchill-M, Soviet Object 706, and Japanese Type 97-M: a numerous, crew-efficient medium walker.

• Against other mass-produced designs (Churchill-M, Object 706, Type 97-M) it is competitive or superior thanks to its rate of fire, optics, and cleaner armour layout.

• Against medium machines such as the American Bastion or German Garm it can hold its own at closer ranges but must avoid prolonged frontal exchanges.

• Against the true heavies — TOG-M, Object 705, O-I-M “Land Yamato”, Citadel, Alpine Monster, or the original Little David — the 47 mm is simply outclassed in both penetration and reach. Survival depends on mobility, flanking, and never allowing those giants a clean shot.

One hundred years later the surviving B1-Ms remain among the more graceful and crew-friendly of the lighter walkers. Compact, well-balanced, and still carrying the distinctive oversized turret that finally fixed the Char B1’s greatest flaw, they continue to serve as reliable medium combatants for whatever organised French remnants endure .It was built to fix the Char B1 and match the mass-produced walkers of every other nation.
Its 47 mm is fast-firing and accurate, but outgunned by the true heavies.
And it still walks.
