Los verracos son representaciones escultóricas, preferentemente en granito, de cerdos o toros de pie, que se fechan a partir del siglo IV a.C. en el occidente peninsular. Hay varias teorías sobre su función y actualmente se acepta que señalan zonas de pastos y vías de comunicación pecuaria controladas desde los oppida (las grandes poblaciones centrales), por lo que se colocaban a su entrada o en lugares muy visibles en el paisaje. Su imagen sería a la vez indicadora y protectora de esos prados. También tuvieron finalidad funeraria en momentos tardíos, en que se reutilizan grabando sobre ellos nombres en latín.

These sculptures of standing pigs or bulls, usually made of granite, first appeared in the western part of the peninsula in the fourth century BC.

There are several theories regarding their function but nowadays they are widely believed to indicate grazing areas and cattle routes controlled by the oppida (large regional settlements). Positioned at the entrance or in a prominent location, their presence served to indicate and protect these pastures. Verracos also had a funerary purpose in the latter days of this period when they were reused and engraved with names in Latin.
