(Unofficially “The Channel Monitor” or simply “Eighteen”)Sister project to the American T21-M “Little David,” but completed later and under even greater desperation. While the United States finished a tiny handful of its siege walkers, the United Kingdom built only one. It was the final major weapons project the nation ever completed. Standing approximately 90 feet (27.4 m) tall from tracked footpads to the top of its submarine-style conning tower, Eighteen is a hybrid coastal-and-amphibious walker of unprecedented scale. Multi-legged with tracked feet, partially submersible, and engineered for true cross-Channel mobility, it was designed from the outset to walk the shoreline, enter shallow water, and—if ordered—cross the English Channel and continue into Europe. Its buoyancy systems, sealed lower hull, and powerful leg actuators allow controlled movement through coastal waters and short open-water crossings when conditions permit, though deeper or rougher seas remain hazardous. A full submarine conning tower crowns the central hull, complete with periscope and heavy crane. Four powerful searchlights, a massive smoke-generating stack, two side-mounted Hispano 20 mm automatic flak turrets, two forward Bren guns, two modified Lewis-gun flak turrets, and a pair of 9.45-inch “Flying Pig” heavy mortars support the main armament: a single BL 18-inch Mk I naval gun—the largest-calibre weapon Britain ever fielded. The gun can still hurl 3,320 lb shells to roughly 37 km. The heavy mortars deliver devastating short-range fire. Secondary batteries and smoke screens make close approach extremely costly. When the collapse of the World War II world finally arrived, this solitary machine became the United Kingdom’s last true fortress. The remaining top-level UK government and the core of organised command withdrew into its vast armoured interior. Originally built with extensive crew spaces, magazines, and machinery compartments, those areas were expanded and reinforced into living quarters, command centres, workshops, and long-term storage. One hundred years later the highest surviving British authority still resides inside Eighteen. It remains the safest location left in the world.The walker itself is still fully mobile. It patrols, relocates along the coast, and can still attempt a Channel crossing if the order is ever given. Its 90-foot bulk, 18-inch gun, and layered defences continue to serve as both mobile stronghold and final redoubt. Only one was ever made.
