Project TOG-M – “The Walking TOG”
(Unofficially “The Heavy Answer” or simply “TOG-M”)

When the full details of the Soviet Object 705 “KV Hybrid” reached Britain — a slow, immensely thickly armoured walking bunker built from KV and Object components — the United Kingdom responded with the heaviest design it could still assemble from existing stocks. Project TOG-M took the massive hull and armour of the TOG 2 heavy tank prototype and mounted it on a purpose-built bipedal chassis. The machine adopts a distinctive “chicken stance” (rear-weighted, crouched posture) specifically to manage the weight distribution and violent recoil of its main armament: the Ordnance QF 28-pounder (94 mm / 3.7-inch) anti-tank gun. The barrel measures 15 feet 5 inches (4.7 m) and was derived from the QF 3.7-inch anti-aircraft gun. It fires approximately 28-pound armour-piercing rounds at high velocity, giving it an effective anti-armour range of roughly 1,500–2,000 yards (1,400–1,800 m) and a maximum reach of several kilometres. Against the thick, composite KV-1 / KV-2 / IS-6 derived armour of the Object 705, the 28-pounder was fully capable of achieving penetrations at medium and closer combat ranges with proper ammunition and shot placement, making the two heavy walkers genuine threats to one another. Secondary armament consists of four 7.92 mm Besa machine guns. The hull retains the original, extremely heavy TOG 2 armour scheme. Protection is prioritised on all faces, making the machine one of the best-protected walkers Britain fielded. The legs themselves were engineered with both armour and balance in mind, thickly plated and designed to keep the high centre of gravity stable under fire. The price of this protection and stability is speed: TOG-M is deliberately slow and ponderous.Internal volume is generous. The large hull provides extra space beyond the normal crew complement, allowing additional personnel or even small infantry squads to be carried when required. This gave the machine a secondary role as a heavily protected troop transport in addition to its primary function as a breakthrough and anti-monster platform.Standing roughly 22–24 feet (6.7–7.3 m) tall in its normal stance (lower when fully crouched), Project TOG-M was Britain’s direct counter to the Soviet Object 705. Where the Russians had welded together KV and Object components into a nearly immovable bunker, the British took their own oversized heavy-tank prototype, put it on legs, and gave it one of the most powerful anti-tank guns they possessed. hundred years later the surviving examples remain among the most heavily armoured of the British walkers. Slow, chicken-legged, and still carrying the thick plating and long 28-pounder of the original TOG 2 concept, they continue to serve as mobile strongpoints and protected transports for whatever organised British forces still endure. It was built to answer the Soviet KV Hybrid.
Its 28-pounder can reach out and reliably threaten even that machine’s heavy armour.
And it still stands.
