Historical Background
El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulcán, is the iconic step-pyramid at the heart of Chichén Itzá in Yucatán, Mexico. Built by the Maya civilization between the 8th and 12th centuries AD, it served as a temple to Kukulcán, the feathered serpent deity closely linked to the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl.
The pyramid features four stairways — one on each side — with 91 steps each. Including the platform at the top, the total comes to 365 steps, echoing the solar calendar. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, sunlight casts a moving shadow along the northern staircase, creating the illusion of a serpent descending the pyramid.
The structure stands about 30 meters tall (including the temple) and measures over 55 meters across at its base. Its remarkable design even produces a unique echo: a handclap in front of the stairs reflects a sound resembling the call of the quetzal bird, an effect likely known to and celebrated by the Maya builders.
