Copper alloy, lost-wax cast Probably 19th century

Description

A cast copper-alloy head surmounted by a small seated figure of an Oba (king). The face has large almond-shaped eyes with raised lids, a broad nose, and full lips. Undulating snake motifs in relief run along both cheeks and down the center of the chin, outlining the lower face. A lizard motif descends the front of the crown toward the brow, and further lizards appear on both sides of the head. A large lizard motif covers the back of the head. The crown is built up into a relief-decorated cap with leaf motifs, and the neck flares at the base so the head can stand on an altar. A round platform on the crown supports the Oba, who sits on a stool holding a staff and wears a tall conical cap. His layered collar and prominent abdomen signal rank and status.
