Granular Synthesis Toolkit for Unreal Engine MetaSounds

No third-party software, no C++. All native DSP graphs.

This MetaSounds pack provides granular synthesis graphs to be used with your own audio files. The files included are the MetaSounds sources and patches built from native MetaSounds nodes. Each graph is structured with comment boxes, the inputs are given tooltips with recommended values and ranges. The synthesizers also include a control panel inside the graph where they can be previewed and experimented with. The toolkit is meant for various types of granular sounds such as soundscapes, vehicles, dynamic environments and scattered elements.

This product supports MetaSounds for Unreal Engine 5.0+

Included in this toolkit are following granular synthesizers:

  • MSS_GranularSimple: Showcases the essential parameters, works well for simple soundscapes, background layers, or any sustained texture.

  • MSS_GranularIntensity: Increases perceived 'size' of the sound by modulating the grain amount, pitch variation and stereo width. Also adds subtle waveshaping and frequency boosting for an enhanced “intensity” feel.

  • MSS_GranularVehicle: Intended for any vehicle or mechanical engine. Move the playback position in the sample to search for fitting engine sounds and modulate the pitch to simulate acceleration or deceleration.

  • MSS_GranularAdvanced: Access to individual parameters to create unique granular textures, uses synchronous granular synthesis from 2 to 8 grains.

  • MSS_GranularScatterer: Scatters randomized snippets of the sound at random intervals, works well for isolated top-level elements without background noise.

It also includes utilities used by the granular synthesizers which can be used in other DSP graphs as well:

  • MSS_Grain: Plays a random snippet of a wave asset with a fade-in and fade-out.

  • MSP_RandomPanner: Randomly pans stereo sounds (using stereo remixed panning or volume lowering).

  • MSP_ChannelFlip: Randomly switches left and right channels for increased variety.

  • MSP_StereoWidth: Narrows or widens the stereo field (up to 2x).

  • MSP_PitchMultiplier: Calculates duration values with pitch compensation.

  • MSP_ResponsiveTriggerRepeat: Uses a square-wave instead of a timer to repeat output triggers, this way the interval (frequency) can be changed without waiting for the next output trigger.
