Project BASTION – “The Heavy Sentinel”
(Unofficially “The Walking Jumbo” or simply “Bastion”)

While other nations chased ever-larger guns and extreme mobility, the United States took a different approach with this machine. Built in the same late-war collapse timeline as the T21-M “Little David,” Project BASTION was conceived as a pure survival platform: a heavy mech whose primary mission was to keep its crew alive and keep fighting long after lighter or more aggressive designs had been destroyed. Engineers started with a T30 heavy-tank turret — a large, roomy experimental design originally intended for much bigger guns — and modified it to accept a high-velocity 76 mm M1 cannon with an approximately 12-foot barrel (the same gun family fitted to late Sherman tanks in the T23-style turret). The 76 mm offered solid anti-tank performance for its day (muzzle velocity around 792 m/s with standard APC, higher with HVAP) but was deliberately chosen as a reliable, well-understood weapon rather than an experimental super-gun. The generous internal volume of the T30 turret was then filled with additional armor plate and substantially increased ammunition storage. The hull and turret received dense, well-angled armor designed to shrug off hits that would cripple lesser machines. Only the mid-rear section, where the engine and certain drive components sit, remains a notable weak point. Everywhere else the protection is thick, carefully sloped, and focused on crew survivability. Large, heavy-duty articulated legs provide an extremely stable firing platform and excellent weight distribution, at the cost of speed. Bastion is slow, deliberate, and difficult to tip or displace. Standing roughly 25 feet tall, it is a squat, heavily protected bipedal (or multi-jointed) walker whose silhouette prioritizes armor volume over elegance. Its purpose is to absorb punishment, protect the men inside, and deliver steady, accurate 76 mm fire while other, more fragile designs maneuver around it. In the hierarchy of the old monsters it was never the hardest hitter or the fastest climber. It was the one built to outlast them. One hundred years later the surviving examples still exist — slow, heavily armored sentinels whose crews (or the remnants of organized command that shelter inside) remain among the best-protected of any of the walking relics .It was built to keep the crew safe.
It trades speed and raw power for dense, angled armor and deep ammunition reserves.
And it still stands.
