Project CHURCHILL-M – “The Walking Mark”

When reports of the Soviet Object 706 “T-26 Surplus” — a crude but numerous light walker built from obsolete stock — reached Britain, the response was characteristically practical. The United Kingdom still possessed large numbers of Churchill infantry tanks that had become increasingly difficult to employ in the broken, ruined terrain of the late war. Rather than scrap them, the decision was made to convert them into a mass-producible walking counterpart to the Soviet surplus machines. The resulting Project CHURCHILL-M used the heavy production Marks VII and VIII as its foundation. The distinctive boxy turret of the Mk VII, with its thicker armour and 75 mm ROQF main gun, was retained and mounted high on a shortened, bipedal chassis. The original Churchill side armour was deliberately removed and the hull shortened to reduce weight and simplify the conversion, leaving the side hull essentially unarmoured. In contrast, the turret, front, and rear retained the full original Churchill armour thickness, giving the machine respectable protection from the most likely threat directions. A low-velocity 3-inch hull howitzer — the same weapon fitted to early Churchills — was kept in the lower hull. It was primarily intended to fire smoke shells to screen the machine’s advance, with the secondary ability to lob high-explosive rounds against bunkers and soft targets. Two 7.92 mm Besa machine guns remained in the turret for close defence. The legs themselves are simple, robust, and intentionally basic. They offer only minimal armour and modest speed, reflecting the project’s priority: turn existing, otherwise under-utilized Churchill hulls into something that could still move across ground too broken for tracked vehicles, and do so in quantity. Standing roughly 19–22 feet tall, the Churchill-M is a straightforward, no-frills infantry support walker. It was never meant to match the heavy experimental monsters in firepower or protection. Its purpose was the same as the Soviet Object 706 it was built to counter: provide a numerous, crew-served walking platform that could be fielded from stocks already on hand. One hundred years later the surviving examples remain among the more commonly encountered British walkers. Side-hulls bare, legs plain, but still carrying the thick frontal and turret armour of the Churchill and the familiar 75 mm and 3-inch combination, they continue to serve as slow, steady, mass-produced guardians of whatever organized British remnants endure. It was built from the Churchills they could no longer use as tanks.
