Basic Information
This long relief is a decorative band for the base of the statue. Originally, a bronze statue was placed above the base, which was a votive offering from the Athenian Atarbos to Athena to commemorate his victory in the Pyrrhic dance competition at the Panathenaic Festival.
## Interpretation of the Relief Panels, Left and Right:
1. Left Panel: 7 Adult Men in Long Robes (Himation)
They perform a circular chorus dance (kyklios) in formation. The robes cover their entire bodies, and their postures are solemn and relaxed, representing the chorus. At the far right, there is also a female lead dancer.
2. Right Panel: 8 Naked Young Men
They are divided into two groups and perform the Pyrrhic dance (Pyrrhic dance, armed war dance). The young men originally wore helmets and held shields. The outline of the shields can be seen on the relief. Their movements are vigorous and powerful, and it is a ritual dance of ancient Greece that simulates battles.
