USS Growler (SSG-577), a submarine powered by conventional diesel engines, carried nuclear cruise missiles and was built and operated by the United States Navy. Growler was the second of the Grayback-class laid down in February of 1955 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.
