Summary

This split-flap display comes as a ready to use airport departure board, including a timetable and simulation with delays and cancellations. Alternatively it can be controlled directly through blueprints to display any text. The provided template closely matches a real world departure board in complexity. The layout and descriptions are highly configurable and can adapt to many different designs and contexts. The look can be smoothly adjusted between brand new and worn out, thanks to a smart material and randomized mesh offsets. If needed all components including meshes, materials and sounds can be customized or replaced.

The display highly optimized to render smoothly even at large sizes, with material animations using World Position Offset and static mesh instancing, this means the individual animations have no impact on rendering performance. The built in dynamic sounds are matched exactly to the amount of letters moving both in timing and intensity and will be automatically played whenever the text is changed.

Features

  • Five demo blueprints including an airport departure board, train departure board, clock, free text and scoreboard

  • Dynamic sound with two alternative cues for softer or harder audio

  • Documentation on how to make adjustments and create new versions

  • The airport example has four displays with a total of 4800 letters matching one of the largest real world departure boards

  • In testing even 16 displays with 19200 letters render at about 120FPS on a current mid-range desktop GPU (Nvidia RTX 3060Ti)

  • Very simple per tick function that only readjusts the sound intensity per display each frame, when the text is not currently updating there is almost zero performance impact from the blueprint

  • Pre configured LODs and draw distance for instanced meshes

  • Base vertex counts for all displays without instances:

    • LOD0 - 578

    • LOD1 - 474

    • Above the instance max draw distance - 418 (default 75 meters ca. 3% screen size)

  • Vertex counts for a single departure board (including instances):

    • LOD0 - ca. 120K-150K, LOD1 - ca. 22K-25K, above max draw distance - 418
