FILM EMULATOR is a real-time rendering plugin for Unreal Engine 5 that builds a full photochemical physically based look in the post-process pipeline.

It applies film stock color response, optional film print, and signature analog artifacts like halation, film grain, gate weave, exposure flicker, gate scratches, and film damage - all in real time.By default the color emulation runs before tonemapping, with an option to apply after the tonemapper for custom pipelines. Plugin is fully suitable with default post-processing pipelines. Fully compatible with default effects like chromatic abberation,grain,bloom etc. Also fully supports Eye-adaption and HDR rendering.

FILM EMULATOR offers a full film pipeline: 142 preset film stocks loaded from JSON, 116 3D LUTs (.cube) auto-imported into UFilmEmulatorLUT assets,

and multiple film print profiles. Presets cover color negative, color slide, and B&W stocks across common formats

(8mm, 16mm, 35mm, Super 35, Super 16, Super 8, Techniscope, 65/70mm, large format, instant). Grain, halation, and damage scale with format size for consistent physical look.

Core FILM EMULATOR features:

  • Full real-time film pipeline with separate film stock and film print stages

  • 116 Physically correct 3D LUTs of film stocks (.cube) with automatic LUT import

  • Film types: color negative, color slide, B&W negative, B&W print

  • Film format scaling for grain, halation, gate weave, scratches, and dirt

  • Film grain controls (ISO, size in microns, chromatic response, animation)

  • Halation with multi-radius falloff, threshold, remjet, and tint controls

  • Gate weave, exposure flicker, scratches, and film dirt/dust (procedural or texture-based)

  • Global per-level overrides via FilmEmulatorGlobalActor

  • Runtime CVars (r.FilmEmulator*) to toggle the system or individual effects

FILM EMULATOR includes a dedicated Tools tab with live controls, preset/print selection, LUT/preset checks, and one-click save/reload of config.

You can also place a FilmEmulatorGlobalActor in a level to override global settings or apply a high-priority look per scene.
