Historical background Caligae were the heavy, hobnailed leather sandals worn across the Roman army, above all by legionaries. Their thick soles were studded with iron hobnails for grip and durability over long marches. This footwear was so emblematic of military life that the emperor Caligula owes his name to it: as a child following his father's legions, he wore a miniature soldier's outfit, caligae included, which earned him the nickname "Caligula", little boot.

Made with archaeological rigor Created by a 3D artist with a master's degree in archaeology, and built from documented historical sources and real-world reconstructions.
