Malwiya Minaret (Abu Dalaf Minaret), Samarra, Iraq
Rising alone in the desert north of Samarra, The Abu Dalaf minaret is a forgotten masterpiece of early Islamic architecture. Built in the 9th century under the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mutawakkil (r. 847–861), it echoes the famous Malwiya Tower of the Great Mosque of Samarra but stands in relative obscurity. Part of the now-ruined Abu Dalaf Mosque, this spiraling structure once called the faithful to prayer in one of the world’s largest mosques of its time. The mosque itself stretched over 46,000 square meters but lies mostly in ruins today, swallowed by the sands of history.
The minaret’s helical form was inspired by Mesopotamian ziggurats, bridging ancient Babylonian traditions with the emerging grandeur of Islamic architecture.
