Description

Ichthyotitan severnensis was a colossal marine reptile that lived during the Late Triassic period around 202–201 million years ago, and it is considered one of the largest animals to have ever lived on Earth, with size estimates suggesting it was comparable to, or possibly even rivaling, the modern blue whale in length. Based on gigantic jaw fossils discovered in the UK, this ichthyosaur likely reached over 20–25 meters long, making it an absolute ocean giant of its time. Unlike predators that relied on crushing bites, its exact bite force is unknown, but scientists believe it was not exceptionally high, as Ichthyotitan probably used suction feeding or rapid jaw snapping to consume large prey such as fish and squid. It lived long before dinosaurs dominated the land, proving that extreme gigantism evolved in the oceans much earlier, and its discovery reshaped our understanding of how fast marine reptiles could grow to enormous sizes.
