Importing a heightmap into Unreal often goes wrong in ways the editor never tells you about. A missing tile becomes a flat hole. Tile names Unreal does not recognise import a single tile. A size that does not fit a Landscape gets padded, and the default settings often use four times as many components as needed.
Landscape Import Doctor checks your heightmap or tile folder BEFORE the import, explains every problem in plain language and tells you exactly what to enter in the New Landscape panel.
TILE SETS, THE WAY UNREAL READS THEM
- Simulates New Landscape > Import from File: which file to pick, the pattern Unreal derives, the tile grid it builds.
- Missing tiles with the exact file name expected, duplicate coordinates (and which file Unreal would use), tiles Unreal skips without a warning, tiles numbered from 1, different resolutions.
- Tile grid view with missing and broken tiles marked.
EXACT LANDSCAPE SETTINGS
- Import resolution and whether it fits a Landscape exactly; if not, the size Unreal will create and nearby sizes that fit.
- Recommended layouts (Balanced, Performance, Detail) with section size, sections per component and component count, compared with Unreal's default.
- Scale X/Y, Scale Z and Location Z from your terrain tool's metres per vertex and export height range, with copy buttons. Save them as profiles.
HEIGHT DATA PROBLEMS
- Big-endian files that would import as noise, flat files, identical tiles, few height levels.
- Shared-edge exports that double every seam, tiles in reversed order, broken seams.
- Preview of the heightmap or the combined tiles.
FIXES THAT NEVER TOUCH YOUR ORIGINALS
- Normalize Tile Names: a copy with names Unreal accepts.
- Create Fixed Copy: crop, extend or resample to an exact Landscape size, fix byte order and remove shared edges; tile sets are re-cut with continuous seams.
- Export Report as .txt or .json.
Supports .r16, .raw (with .json) and .png heightmaps from any terrain tool. The tile rules and size predictions were checked against Unreal's own import code in 5.7 and 5.8, and against landscapes created from test data.
