Next Gen 3D Navigation AI (LCM Nav3D) - Highly Optimized NextGen Infinite 3D Pathfinding & Volumetric Navigation for Unreal Engine

Overview

Volumetric navigation for Unreal Engine. Sparse voxel octree pathfinding for flying, swimming, and free-floating agents from a single agent to crowds of over ten thousand.

Description

LCM Nav3D is a full-3D navigation system designed for agents that move through space rather than across it. Instead of a flat, walkable navmesh, it carves your level's empty air into a tree of boxes - a Sparse Voxel Octree (SVO) and paths through the free space. This gives flying, swimming, and free-floating agents genuine vertical freedom through interiors, around structures, and across open terrain.

It works across the whole Unreal AI stack: Behavior Trees and StateTree get per-agent control at full parity, and Mass Entity takes the same solver to massive crowds. Pathfinding runs asynchronously on the CPU, off the game thread. Octree builds run on the GPU (DirectX 12, DirectX 11 and Vulkan) and produce exactly the same tree as the CPU build, which dedicated servers use. The solver is deterministic: identical results across runs, for replays, lockstep networking and automated testing.

New in 3.5

Behaviour Nodes: Engage, Investigate, Flee, Scan Area, Perch, Land and Take Off for flying agents, each as a Behavior Tree task, a StateTree task and a Mass crowd task. Agents in a crowd share the work: no two take the same perch, cover or vantage point.

Land and Take Off: drones descend vertically, birds and fish glide in with a braking flare, onto moving decks, moving lorries or under a roof. New EQS generators and tests find landing sites.

88 Free Demo Levels: a one-click download from inside the editor. Six new scenarios (Hunter Drone, Harbour, Sea Cliffs, Coral Reef, Warehouse, Sentry Drones) in Behavior Tree, StateTree and Mass editions, eight Feature Examples levels that check themselves as they run, and a new demo menu.

QuickStart Level: inside the plugin, working with nothing else installed.

Also new: the GPU octree build, fish that stay inside Water Volumes, flight that follows the level's gravity, and a much smaller plugin download.

Feature Highlight

  • Core Volumetric Navigation: true volumetric 3D navigation that carves empty air into a Sparse Voxel Octree (SVO).

  • World Support: finite levels and infinite streamed worlds, with chunks generated around the agents as they move.

  • Solvers & Smoothing: A* (fastest), Theta* (most direct) and Lazy Theta* (balanced default), with raw, linear shortcut and curved spline path smoothing.

  • Behaviour Nodes: ready-made Engage, Investigate, Flee, Scan Area, Perch, Land and Take Off behaviours, plus Fly To and patrol nodes.

  • Mass Entity Crowds: crowds of 10,000 and beyond through the Mass ECS, with per-agent asynchronous paths or a shared flow field sampled O(1) by the whole swarm.

  • Behavior Tree & StateTree: full node sets for both that produce identical flight behaviour.

  • Tactical EQS in True 3D: EQS generators and tests that score real volume instead of a floor plane, including landing sites.

  • AI Perception: a bridge that wires stock UE perception into volumetric threat tracking, cover evaluation and Engage.

  • Dynamic Obstacles: the octree is re-stamped as actors move, so agents reroute live around moving geometry.

  • 6-DOF Flight & Swim Locomotion: multirotor, bird and fish archetypes with banking, inertia, turn-rate limits, arrival deceleration, landing and take-off.

  • Hybrid Recast Integration: walking agents on Recast and flying agents on the SVO in the same level, using a Z-band filter.

  • Production Ready: Smart Objects, Nav Links, volumetric NavArea modifiers, Gameplay Debugger integration and server-authoritative replication.

Documentation & Samples

  • Delivered as complete C++ source, fully exposed to Blueprint with no C++ required to use it.

  • A QuickStart level ships inside the plugin. 88 demo levels covering Behavior Tree, StateTree and Mass Entity are a free one-click download inside the editor (LCM Nav3D menu > Get the Demo Levels).

  • A 162-page illustrated PDF manual, 15 step-by-step tutorials, a Feature Examples guide, Settings, Flight and Mass references, and a full API reference.
