Описание

Fort Saint-Elme is a fortress located at the tip of the Xiberras Peninsula in Malta. Built in 1552 by the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, it controls the entrance to the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. Construction of the fort began in 1552 and was completed in 1556 by Homedes’ successor, Claude de La Sengle. The pre-existing chapel of Our Lady of Good Help was incorporated into the fort and rededicated to Saint Anne. At that time, Fort Saint-Elme was a small, star-shaped structure with four points, built on rock, surrounded by ditches, and reinforced by a cavalier on its seaward side. However, it had a major flaw: it was overlooked by Mount Xiberras. To strengthen the fort on the Marsamxett side, Grand Master Jean de Valette added a demi-lune.
