When the Long Night Wars killed every drone, every radar, every targeting AI, the armies that survived were the ones that went back to meat and iron. The Orthrus was the answer, no panoramic cameras. No 360-degree lidar. No b.s . Just two cockpits welded back-to-back inside a 14-meter slab of riveted iron, four reverse-joint legs that can climb rubble like a wolf climbs scree, and enough guns to make a battleship jealous. The front cockpit — “Alpha” — belongs to the Driver. He sees where the beast is going, slams the throttles, and commands 3x 120 mm smoothbore cannon that jut from the top like a horn. When he pulls the triggers, the whole chassis recoils hard enough to crack ribs if you’re not strapped in right. The rear cockpit — “Beta” — is the Watcher. His seat faces backward. His only windows are narrow armored slits and a periscope that sticks up like a perked ear. His job is simple: make sure nothing ever gets behind the Orthrus alive. Because nothing has eyes in the back of its head… except this thing. Crews are paired for life. They breathe the same recycled air, share the same tiny bunk slung between the ammo racks, and learn to read each other’s silences over the intercom. A good pair finishes each other’s sentences mid-firefight. A bad pair dies screaming as something tears the back armor open while the Driver is still looking the wrong way. Veteran crews tattoo a second snarling dog head on the back of their neck so even when they’re out of the cockpit, everyone knows: these two always watch each other’s six. The Orthrus turns fast, as it needs to.
It just keeps walking forward while its rear head smiles with fire at anything stupid enough to follow. They say if you ever see an Orthrus from behind on the battlefield…
