描述

Photon Fusion is a high-performance multiplayer networking plugin for Unreal Engine built around state replication and distributed authority. Instead of forcing teams to choose between unstable client-hosted listen server sessions or the cost and operational pressure of dedicated server fleets, Fusion uses Photon Cloud as the central hub for game state distribution, helping studios reduce operational complexity while keeping multiplayer responsive, scalable, and production-ready.

Fusion is built with an Unreal-first approach as a native Unreal plugin and works like Unreal, not against Unreal. You can keep using familiar concepts such as replicated properties, RepNotify, Blueprints, C++, ACharacter, Character Movement Component, and RPC-driven gameplay, while Fusion synchronizes the multiplayer state across connected players.

For teams that would otherwise rely on a listen server, Fusion removes some of the biggest production limitations of client-hosted multiplayer. Players benefit from managed room-based sessions, global and regional QoS, and cloud-backed online infrastructure, instead of relying solely on unstable raw peer-to-peer connectivity.

Fusion is especially strong for co-op, mobile F2P, XR, and large-scale games where costs, simplicity, global reach, and smooth gameplay under real-world network conditions matter as much as raw networking capability.

Core capabilities:

Forecast Physics

Fusion for Unreal includes Forecast Physics, a distributed physics prediction system integrated with Unreal Chaos Physics. It adds networked physics that feels like gameplay, not correction. When replicated actors use physics, Forecast can automatically help synchronize object behaviours across clients. This is especially useful for interactive physics objects, player-object interactions, and vehicles, where remote motion needs to feel natural rather than delayed or disconnected.

Forecast Physics reduces the usual friction of networked physics by combining remote states with local simulation and prediction, helping teams deliver multiplayer interactions that feel much closer to real gameplay instead of obvious network correction.

Distributed Actor Authority & Ownership

Let the right player control the right object at the right time. In Fusion, only one client at a time can modify an actor's properties, but ownership can be dynamically changed with master, transactional, and dynamic ownership modes. You get better shared-world interactions with clean handling of transfer of ownership for pickups, vehicles, movable objects, trigger actions, and co-op moments.

Much faster and more flexible than classic client-host ownership, Fusion lets you build responsive multiplayer gameplay without forcing everything through one rigid server pattern.

Multiplayer Without Dedicated Server Pain

Fusion removes a huge amount of server ops complexity while still giving cloud-backed sessions, QoS, and high performance. Fusion requires no dedicated server fleet, offers lower costs and a lighter operational burden, and is a strong fit for the majority of realtime multiplayer games outside cases that require full server authority.

Fusion not only provides a faster path from prototype to a live multiplayer game, but also removes the complexity and high cost of orchestrating dedicated servers.

Consistent Game Time

Fusion is designed around a synchronized time-based multiplayer simulation, providing developers with a consistent timing model for all objects across clients. Fusion remains consistent over time, even during ownership transfers, with minimal jitter. That matters for gameplay systems where timing is critical, including movement, interactions, effects, cooldowns, and other time-sensitive mechanics.

Consistent game time makes multiplayer behaviour easier to reason about and build on.

Other Replication Features

Interest Management

Built-in area-based spatial filtering and custom interest keys ensure that clients receive only relevant updates, enabling smooth scaling to dozens or even hundreds of players by design. Reduces unnecessary bandwidth usage and helps large scenes scale more effectively.

Smooth Remote Rendering

Keeps remote actors looking stable over the network.

Reduces visible jitter and makes moment-to-moment play easier to read.

QoS / Global Regions / DDoS / SLA

Backed by managed online infrastructure instead of raw peer connections alone.

Important for latency, reliability, and live operation at scale.

High Performance

Designed to handle dense multiplayer scenes with less CPU and memory overhead.

Matters when actor counts, player counts, or update frequency start climbing.
