Piazza Santo Stefano (known as “piâza San Stêven” in Bolognese dialect and also referred to as Piazza delle Sette Chiese, or “Square of the Seven Churches”) is a square in Bologna. It is actually a triangular widening of Via Santo Stefano; the name Piazza Santo Stefano does not appear in the official city street directory, although it is commonly used by locals.
This widening of Via Santo Stefano was once known as Trebbo dei Beccadelli, meaning “place where the Beccadelli family gathered,” as the family had apartments there. A large oak tree once stood in the square, surrounded by other trees and benches where city notables would gather. Following the expulsion of the Beccadelli family in the 1330s, amidst the conflicts between the major Bolognese families, the ancient oak was cut down, and the family’s houses were sold.
