Styracosaurus albertensis was a ceratopsid dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, around 75 million years ago, mainly in what is now Alberta, Canada. It was an herbivore, feeding mostly on low-growing plants like shrubs and cycads. Its most distinctive feature was its large frill decorated with long spikes and a prominent nasal horn, which likely served for defense against predators and possibly for display during mating or social interactions.
Styracosaurus was about 5.5 meters long and 1.8 meters tall, with a heavy, muscular body that helped protect it from predators such as Albertosaurus. It likely lived in herds, which would have provided additional safety. Its sharp beak allowed it to efficiently bite through tough vegetation. Overall, the spikes and horns of Styracosaurus were crucial for defense, species recognition, and possibly dominance displays within the herd.
