The KAI-20 Angara was an all-metal flying boat created by V.A.Korchagin
at the Kazan Aviation Institute in 1956 after had completed the development of
the KAI-18. He made some changes from the earlier design and replaced the piston engine
with TVD-10 engines which were mounted inside the fuselage.
Three blade pusher propellers were fitted in the tail. In 1960 the project was modified
at Dubna by the V.N.Chelomey Design Bureau. In 1964 the Department of Polar
Aviation approved the project for the first stage of manufacturing.
