Project LITTORIO – “The Last Triple”
(Unofficially “Il Gigante” or simply “Triple”)When rumors of the American T21-M, British Project MONITOR, and Austrian Project PARIS reached Italy, the Regia Marina and remaining industrial authorities scrambled to respond. They possessed only one weapon large enough to matter: a salvaged triple turret mounting the 381 mm/50 Model 1934 guns—the most powerful naval rifles Italy ever built, originally intended for the Littorio-class battleships. It was the best they had, so they made it work. The turret was mated to a heavily rebuilt hull that incorporated the thickest available armor plates from Fiat 2000 and P26/40 tank production, with particular emphasis on a strongly sloped frontal glacis. Heavy hydraulic legs were added, transforming the static naval mount into a fully mobile quadrupedal walker. The result was a relatively compact yet immensely powerful machine, optimized for speed and punch rather than secondary batteries or extreme terrain climbing. Standing approximately 75–80 feet (23–24 m) tall, the Last Triple carries three 381 mm/50 guns with barrels roughly 63 feet (19.2 m) long. Each gun fires armor-piercing shells of about 885 kg (1,950 lb) or lighter high-explosive/SAP rounds at muzzle velocities of 850–880 m/s, reaching maximum ranges of 42–44.6 km. Rate of fire is approximately 1.3 rounds per minute per gun under ideal conditions. The only additional fittings are powerful searchlights and the finest naval telescopic directors available, giving the crew exceptional long-range observation and targeting. Despite its size and the enormous mass of the triple turret, advanced hydraulics and a refined power train make it notably quick for a machine of its class—widely regarded as the fastest of all the surviving “monsters.” It packs a devastating triple punch while remaining agile enough to reposition rapidly across open ground or coastal plains. One hundred years later it still stands and still walks. The intact core of the Italian government resides inside its armored hull—the safest location left to them. The machine continues to serve as both mobile fortress and final redoubt, its three long barrels a permanent reminder that Italy answered the age of monsters with the heaviest guns it possessed.Only one was ever completed.
