"Ma Wan 1868" is the official name of the second phase of the Ma Wan Park project in Hong Kong. This iconic name originates from the historical event of the Qing Dynasty government establishing a customs house in Ma Wan in 1868, symbolizing Ma Wan's long history as an important node on the Maritime Silk Road. Located on Ma Wan Island, the project covers nearly 500,000 square feet and aims to preserve the old village and transform it into a colorful art community combining cultural creativity, art, leisure, and tourism, reminiscent of a "Hong Kong version of Cinque Terre." It is scheduled to officially open in March 2025.
Key elements of "Ma Wan 1868":
Historical Background (1868): The Qing government established a customs house in Ma Wan, witnessing the historical imprint of international trade and cultural exchange at that time.
"Old Village Revitalization" Concept: Revitalizing the old village houses, restoring historical buildings, and preserving historical sites such as the Tin Hau Temple and the Kowloon Walled City Monument.
Colorful Houses and Art: Several designers have painted the exterior walls of the old village into vibrant "colorful houses," creating a unique art mural community.
Micro-Resort Area: A leisure tourism landmark integrating creative studios, art workshops, sea-view restaurants, dining, urban farms, and camping areas on "Little Island Hill."
New Cultural and Tourism Highlights: After opening, it has become a cultural and artistic island attracting both local and international tourists.
Ma Wan 1868 is not only a popular spot for taking photos, but also dedicated to promoting Ma Wan's local history, revitalizing the old village into a modern leisure area full of cultural and creative vitality.
