Built in the 14th century, Burkheim Castle hosted Emperor Charles IV in 1347. In 1572 ,together with other fiefs in Alsace, it became the property of General Lazarus von Schwendi, who transformed it into a Renaissance castle unmatched in that region, unfortunately to be destroyed in 1672 by the French troops of King Louis XIV.
