The palanquin is a historical means of transportation consisting of an enclosed litter or seat fitted with carrying poles and borne on the shoulders of porters. The word palanquin originates from the Portuguese palanquim, which in turn derives from the Sanskrit palyaṅka, meaning "bed" or "couch."
Used since ancient times in Asia, Persia, Egypt, and Ancient Rome.
Widely employed throughout the East and India to transport monarchs, nobles, and religious deities.
Introduced to Europe through Portuguese colonial expeditions and trade routes in Asia.
Later adapted in Western Europe as the luxurious sedan chair, becoming a prestigious means of transport for the nobility and wealthy elite.
