FSTR Fog Painter is a real-time volumetric fog painting plugin for Unreal Engine 5.
Create ground mist, local fog pockets and layered colored atmosphere directly in your level, without setting up particle systems or material graphs.
Open FSTR Fog Mode, choose your brush and start painting. Your fog is stored as editable 3D density, not a collection of fog cards or particle emitters. Save the level and return to adjust it whenever you need to. There is no separate Save To Texture step.
Use Sphere for rounded fog masses or Ellipsoid for broad, shallow layers. Adjust radius, height, softness and opacity, then use Surface Offset to place the painting above floors, below ceilings or in front of walls. Paint and erase directly in the viewport with editor Undo / Redo.
Keep multiple fog layers inside one FSTR Painted Fog actor. Each layer has its own painting, color, density, noise and animation settings.
Duplicate, reorder, hide, lock or solo layers as you work. Change a layer’s appearance without repainting its shape, and combine different layers to create richer atmosphere.
FSTR Simple, FSTR Perlin, FSTR Cloud (Perlin + Worley) and Unreal Clouds provide different internal structures.
Adjust scale, strength, contrast and detail without modifying the saved painting.
The three generated FSTR sources support 32³, 64³, 128³ and 256³ noise textures.
Unreal Clouds uses the native engine texture at its own resolution.
Directional Motion moves the noise through the painted volume. Evolution changes its internal structure without requiring wind.
Use them separately or together: the fog can drift internally, change in place, or remain static while its painted region stays where you placed it.
A single checkbox enables lower-resolution fog rendering with depth-aware reconstruction. It reduces the number of traced rays without changing the scene resolution or your painted-density and noise textures.
Fine fog detail may become softer; switch between modes to find the right balance for your project.
Built-in GPU timing is available through stat FSTRFog, with separate readings for total fog rendering, raymarching, and Fast Mode reconstruction/compositing. Measure the effect in your own scene instead of relying on a fixed performance claim.
Engine versions: Unreal Engine 5.6, 5.7 and 5.8
Platform: Windows 64-bit
Plugin modules: Runtime and Editor
Included: C++ source and PDF documentation
Layer limit: Up to 16 visible, non-empty renderable fog layers per view.
This product includes the FSTR Fog Painter plugin only. All environments, demo levels, meshes, vegetation, and other scene assets shown in the screenshots and videos are for demonstration purposes only and are not included.
FSTR Fog Painter uses its own depth-aware renderer and does not require Exponential Height Fog or Local Fog Volumes.
It is an artist-controlled atmosphere tool, not a physically accurate lighting or fluid simulation.
Version 1.0.0 does not sample scene lights or generate volumetric light shafts or volumetric shadows.
Layers are composited in stack order.
The runtime plugin is required to render saved paintings.
The optional Unreal Clouds source requires its engine assets to be included when packaging; otherwise, a generated fallback is used.
Rendering cost depends on screen coverage, layer overlap, noise settings and target hardware.
