The Hellenistic Attic helmet first appeared around 330–320 BC, at the end of the Classical period, shortly after the conquests of Alexander the Great.

Its golden age lasted from 300 to 150 BC, when it became especially popular among officers, cavalrymen, and elite units of the Hellenistic kingdoms, including the Macedonians, Seleucids, Ptolemies, and others. From the 2nd century BC onward, it was gradually replaced by more protective helmet designs, such as Thracian, Boeotian, and Italic-inspired models.

Despite this decline, the Attic helmet continued to be worn ceremonially by Roman officers during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. These later examples were often lavishly decorated, although they were no longer standard equipment for ordinary soldiers.
